A fire detector is at least provided with a metal oxide semiconductor whose measuring shunt is affected by gas components produced in the fire. For the purpose of early detection of the fire, prior to an open conflagration breaking out, the temporal change of the electrical resistance of the metal oxide semiconductor is measured continuously and the signal size obtained, which corresponds to the fluctuations of the carbon monoxide concentration, is employed, after comparison with a limit value, to trigger the fire detector.
