The invention relates to an electric coffee-making machine, having a fresh-water container and a water pipe leading from the latter to a coffee filter and having a timer for switching on the appliance, preferably the heater, at a preprogrammable point in time. The invention is based on the object of increasing the operational reliability in a coffee-making machine of this type and of preventing unintentional switching-on by the timer unit. According to the invention, this object is achieved in that a water sensor is arranged in the fresh-water container or the water pipe and is connected to the timer and prevents switching on if there is no water. As a result, switching the heater on is prevented if the coffee-making machine is not prepared for making coffee. <IMAGE>
