A motor vehicle transmission for connection between an engine (1) and a driving road wheel (2). The transmission is of the kind that comprises a torque convertor (4), a clutch (6) for transmitting mechanically torque from a pump (4a) side to a turbine (4b) side of the torque convertor, and control mechanism (14) for controlling operation of the clutch. The transmission is characterised in that the control mechanism comprises a clutch release mechanism for operation to disengage the clutch (6) in response to increase in engine output power to above a predetermined set value whereby the clutch for the torque convertor can be immediately disengaged at any time when it is desired to obtain a torque amplification function.
