Improvements made in a method for obtaining 2-aryl- propionic acids of formula I, where AR is an aryl group, by reaction of the aryl-methyl ketones II with a halogen, in basic medium and in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst consisting of a quaternary ammonium salt, followed by catalytic hydrogenation of the resulting intermediates. The improvements consist in the recovery of the spent catalyst by concentration of the aqueous phase containing the catalyst; precipitation of the inorganic salts and precipitation of the catalyst by addition of acetone. The recovered catalyst can be reused in subsequent reaction cycles without diminishing its catalytic activity, and therefore the improved method of obtaining I is economically feasible on an industrial scale. The compounds I are anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic, so that they have great therapeutic application. <IMAGE>
