The bottom of canals or at least sections of the canal bottom are often provided with a fixing and sealing layer which has to be applied underwater as plastic mortar to the canal bottom. So that this difficult work can be carried out, a machine is proposed which is essentially designed as an excavator, preferably as a telescopic excavator and is additionally equipped with a cutting and smoothing shield. Thus the mortar can first of all be applied to the canal bottom and can then be scraped and smoothed with a single machine. Adherence to the specified thickness of the mortar layer to be applied is preferably ensured by vertically adjustable supporting members on the arm carrying the cutting and smoothing shield, for example rollers or skids. <IMAGE>
