PROCESS OF COOLING HOT GRANULAR SOLIDS

This invention relates to a process for cooling hot granular solids. According to this process, granular solids at temperatures of about 400 to 1300.degree.C are maintained in a cooling zone in an agitated or trickling state and air is caused to rise through the cooling zone in direct contact with the solids. At least part of the contact heat of the solids is dissipated and recovered in view of being utilized. The solids to be cooled may be obtained by dry distillation of oil sand, oil shale, oil chalk, diatomaceous earth or native asphalt. solids which contain 1 to 15% by weight carbon may be burnt at least in part in a combustion chamber supplied with combustion air and may then be fed at temperatures of about 600 to 1300.degree.C to the cooling zone. This process is particularly interesting.
