<p>A drive shaft, partic. a horizontal shaft, for an intermittent, high-speed machine such as a centrifuge, having a centrifugal hydraulic seal for high-speed operation incorporates an auxiliary friction-ring seal which becomes effective only when the speed of the shaft is below the threshold required for the formation of the hydraulic ring. The friction seal comprises a ring of resilient material having an essentially V-shaped cross-section, one arm of the V being affixed to the rotating part of the joint such that the free arm rests against a lip on the fixed part at low speeds to form the seal, but lifts from the lip at high speeds under the centrifugal force generated. The action of the auxiliary seal is fully automatic, requiring no additional controls; it is inoperative when the machine is at full speed, but preserves the seal when the machine is at rest.</p> |
