Analysis by computer-controlled plasma spectrometry - of geological samples after fusion and leaching with conc. hydrochloric acid

Samples for analysis are fused with sodium peroxide in a furnace at 450 deg.C. for 45 minutes and the resulting material extracted with 6N hydrochloric acid. The extracted soln. is injected into an argon plasma spectrometer. The operation is controlled by computer at each stage from identification of samples, automatic weighing and wt. recording, automatic sequential feed into plasma chamber and automatic recording of spectrometer readings. In each sample, three measurements are taken and any measurement not within 1% of the mean is rejected and the measurement repeated until three readings within 1% are obtd. Used in the analysis of geological samples, sensitivities as low as 0.2 p.p.m. can be obtd.
