In a writing instrument, especially a ballpoint pen, the automatically enforced withdrawal of the ink carrier into the retracted position at rest is achieved by a method whereby the actuating mechanism of the writing instrument has at least one press-in element in the region in which the user's finger bears on the pencil-shaped housing, projecting outwards and arranged in a recess in the wall of the pin-shaped housing, a movement conversion device arranged on the press-in element for converting the radial inward movement of the press-in element into an axial advancing movement of the ink carrier towards the writing head thereof, and a sliding sleeve transmitting the axial advancing movement to the ink carrier. An improvement is represented by two press-in elements in diametrally opposite recesses in the housing. The press-in elements may be designed as spherical push-buttons.
