Method of increasing sugar content in sugarcane and sorghum

The application of certain sulfonylurea compounds to sugarcane and sorghum increases their sugar content. These compounds have the formula: <IMAGE> wherein R is C1-C4 alkyl, C3-C4 alkenyl, CH2CH2OCH3 or CH2CH2Cl; R1 is H or CH3; X is CH3, OCH3, OC2H5 or CH2OCH3; Y is CH3 or OCH3; and Z is CH or N; or an agriculturally acceptable salt thereof.
