PURPOSE: To obtain a photoresponsive composition exhibiting photoresponsiveness of sufficient magnitude and rate with as low an optical power as possible by incorporating a specified polymethine pigment as the pigment. CONSTITUTION: This photoresponsive composition responds to a light of specified wavelength and reversibly changes the transmittance and/or refractive index of a light of another wavelength, and a polymethine pigment shown by (ϕ<1> -(CR<1> =CR<2> )n -CH=ϕ<2> )<+> X<-> is incorporated as the pigment. In the formula, ϕ<1> is a univalent heterocyclic ring residue linked to a methine group with carbon atom, the residue may have a substituent, ϕ<2> is a bivalent heterocyclic ring residue linked to the carbon atom and methine chain, the residue may have a substituent, (n) is an integer of 0, 1, 2, or >=3, and X<-> is a counter anion chemically inert to the cationic part of the pigment. Besides, the chemical inertness means that the X<-> does not react chemically with the cationic part of the pigment and electrostatically interacts with the pigment as a mere ion species. |
