In order to test the air permeability of cigarette wrappers of filter cigarettes with ventilation perforations in the region of the filter, the leading end of the cigarette is subjected to compressed air in a first testing station, the pressure being measured at the filter end, which is sealed in a substantially airtight manner. At a second test station, the filter end is subjected to compressed air and the pressure is measured at the leading end, which is sealed in a substantially pressure-tight manner. From the two pressure figures, the point at which air emerges from the cigarette wrapper can be calculated. If this point is not in the region of the perforations, such a cigarette is rejected.
