A method for the improvement of the fastness properties of a dye or of an optical brightener on a textile material containing hydroxyl groups, which is characterised in that dyed, printed or brightened textile material is treated with an aftertreatment agent which contains A) a linear or branched-member polymer, which, as recurring units, contains at least two quaternary ammonium groups which are connected to one another by alkylene or arylene groups as bridge members, B) if appropriate an N-methylol derivative of a urea, melamine, guanamine, triazinone, urone, carbamate or acid amide and, as an essential component, C) a catalyst for the crosslinking of N-methylol compounds such as B), and a heat treatment is then carried out, where quaternary polymers A) which contain melamine groups are novel.
