PURPOSE:To perform colored display against colorless background by mixing dichromatic dye consisting of red/violet, yellow and blue/green components and nondichromatic dye with liquid crystal using the guest/host effect. CONSTITUTION:To perform colored display against black background by using liquid crystal on the basis of the guest/host effect, red/violet, yellow and blue/ green dyes, the three primary colors of subtractive color mixture, are appropriately mixed and a nonlighting part is blacked; one color at least in the dyes to be used should be a nondichromatic color or a color which scarecely includes dichromatic characteristics. Positive cholesteric liquid crystal 6 with which nondichromatic dye 13 and positive dichromatic dies 11, 12 are mixed is sealed between horizontally or vertically oriented base plates 1 and 2. A nonselecting part 9 is blacked by the dichromatic dyes 11, 12 and a selecting part 10 shows the complement of the dye 13 by absorbing only the dye 13. |
