The process for treating the effluent sludge in sewage treatment plants by an anaerobic alkaline digestion process and for operating the sewage treatment plants with the gas and heat energy produced in the digestion process is characterised in that the heated fresh sludge is continuously fed to the digestion process and in that the digestion gas produced in the sludge digestion is used to supply gas engines for driving compressed air generators for the forced aeration of the activation process and for driving generators for power generation for operating the plants or for other suitable purposes.
