For launching an altitude sail, a guide kite (1) on a fly line (3) is first launched and one element or a number of elements (7) of the unfurled altitude sail is/are fastened to the fly line (3). The fly line (3) is then released until the unfurled altitude sail has reached a suitable height. The elements (7) of the altitude sail are then unfolded and can be stabilised.
