The swimming pool safety device comprises a net spanning the area of the pool which is brought to the surface by inflatable floats if a wave, caused by an object falling into the pool, is detected. The net is spanned across a rectangular frame (1) which rests at the bottom (7) of the pool. Inflatable floats (6) are fitted to the frame, and have a flexible hose coupling to a source of compressed air (8). A detector (11) mounted on the edge of the pool at the water surface (10) operates a solenoid valve (12) which releases air into the floats, lifting the net to the surface. The detector then disconnects (14) the electric supply to the solenoid valve to conserve air.
