A tunnel, in particular a rock tunnel, with a high overburden is distinguished by a reclining, oval, preferably lenticular, cross-section in which the ratio of clearance width to clearance height is about 1:2 to 1:1.5. This gives the tunnel a very low wall height, as a result of which the cubage of the wall part subjected to the ripping is reduced to the square root, since the width of the wall part is also reduced at the same time by reducing the height. This reduces the number and length of the rock bolts which anchor the wall part under a biaxial compressive-stress state back into the sound rock. A further advantage of the reclining tunnel cross-section consists in the fact that, if it is used as a railway tunnel, a centre track passable by road vehicles can be arranged between the clearance gauges of the railway.
