The protective device for top-pan precision balances possesses a pot-like cage (8) which encloses the balance pan (11) and the underside of which is supported on the balance housing (2). The cage has a bottom orifice which is limited by a connection piece (14) projecting upwards from the cage bottom and surrounding the balance-pan supporting pin (1). To prevent granular or powdery weighing material from entering the balance housing, the balance-pan supporting pin carries, at its upper end, a hood (12) which surrounds the connection piece on the cage in the manner of a bell and of which the tubular portion facing downwards covers the connection piece, at the same forming an annular gap (13). Together with an upwardly directed continuous collar (17) which is located between the balance-pan supporting pin (1) and the cage connection piece (14) and is on the balance housing (2) and which limits a second annular gap (19) relative to the balance-pan supporting pin, the first-mentioned annular gap (13) forms a labyrinth which closes off the environment of the balance pan relative to the housing interior in a dust-proof manner. <IMAGE>
