Tongue depressing spatula for use with laryngoscope - has pair of longitudinal tubes fixed to edges to permit passage of optical fibres

The tongue deflector holds the mouth open and deflects the epiglottis to permit a pharyno-laryngoscope to be used. It comprises a spatula (1) with a hexagonal section sleeve (4) extending at right angles to it. The front end of the spatula is raised at 10 degrees to the horizontal and has an oval-shaped distal end. A small bore tube (2) is fixed to each longitudinal edge of the spatula through which illuminating optical fibres pass. The spatula has a longitudinal groove formed in to permit an adjustable mouth opening element to be fitted to it.
