Process for the preparation of higher hydrocarbons, in particular for the preparation of ethane from methane, in which, after sufficient temperature increase for a dissociative chemisorption at a catalyst surface, a catalytic cooling is carried out to a temperature at which C-C recombination occurs. A surface intermediate formed during this, which is composed for the most part of chemisorbed C2 hydrocarbons, can be desorbed in an H2 stream at constant temperature, in order, with the use of a platinum catalyst, to generate an end product which is composed for the most part of ethane.
