A composition for inhibiting the growth of aquatic plants contains an inert carrier material in the form of a water-in-oil emulsion and a compound of the formula <IMAGE> in which the substituents are as defined in Claim 1. In the method of inhibiting the growth of aquatic plants, an amount of a compound of the formula I or of a non-phytotoxic acid addition salt of these compounds which suffices to inhibit the growth of the plants, without the concentration having a herbicidal effect, is added to the water containing these aquatic plants. The method and the compositions are suitable for controlling aquatic plants which are anchored at the bottom, but also for controlling aquatic plants which float on the surface or in the water, and it is advantageous to adjust the specific gravity of the compositions used in such a way that they either sink in the water or float at the surface, depending on the most important weed to be treated.
