An apparatus and a method for providing contents by using a machine-readable code are provided to extract category information stored in correspondence to the machine-readable code, thereby enabling a user to receive various contents included into a category even when the user attempts to read a carrier having a single machine-readable code. A portable terminal device photographs a bar code(S602). The portable terminal device analyzes and decodes the photographed bar code to extract a code value from the bar code(S604,S606). The portable terminal device transmits the extracted code value to a first server(S608). The first server recognizes the transmitted code value and identifies category information corresponding to the code value(S610,S612). The first server transmits the extracted category information to the portable terminal device(S614). The portable terminal device recognizes the received category information(S616). The portable terminal device transmits the category information to a second server(S618). The second server recognizes the transmitted category information and identifies a category corresponding to the category information(S620). The second server extracts contents belonging to the category(S622). The second server transmits the contents to the portable terminal device(S624). The portable terminal device recognizes the received contents and displays or downloads the contents(S626,S628).
