The water-polar org. solvent ratio in water-dilutable alkyd varnishes is maintained at a sufficiently high value (at least 5.0:1.0) to allow the time interval between the first and second application to the substrate to be sufficiently high so that the second layer can be applied in a convenient time without curling or wrinkling of the coating, but not so high that the alkyd resin ppts. causing discontinuity in the coating. A mixt. contg. 80% solids water-dilutable alkyd-Propasol P (propoxypropanol) soln. 340, aq. NH4OH 26, butyl Cellosolve 30, and water 482 parts was mixed with 7 parts Tinuvin P paste to give a soln. for coating compositions.
