METHOD OF FORMING A SOCKET WELD

A tubular element (10) is to be welded to a tube (20). A recess is bored into the tube surface to form an annular socket (30). The seat (40) of the socket is tapered from its outer circumference inward at a downward angle with respect to the horizontal of at least 10 deg. and not more than 15 deg. The taper ensures that sufficient space (45) is available for the end face of the element to deform without causing stresses in the weld seam(60).
