Novel, quaternary ammonium salts of diepoxides and diamines contain units of the formula . in which E is a divalent bridge member of the formula , , , , or , t is 1 to 4, u is 1 to 8, v is 1 or 2 and R1 to R4 are each substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, or (R1 and R2) and/or (R3 and R4) together with the nitrogen atom to which they are bonded form a heterocyclic ring, and M1, M2 and M3 are each acyl or hydrogen, Y1 and Y2 are each alkylene or substituted or unsubstituted phenylene, D is -NHCONH-, -NHCODlCONH-,-CONH-, -OCONH-, -COO-, -COD2CO-, -OOC-D3-COO- or-OOC-NH-D4-NH-COO-, D1 is a direct bond, alkylene, alkenylene, arylene, heteroarylene, diaminoalkylene, diaminoarylene or substituted or unsubstituted dioxyalkylene, polyoxyalkyleneoxy or dioxyarylene, D2 is diaminoalkylene or substituted or unsubstituted dioxyalkylene, polyoxyalkyleneoxy or dithioalkylene, D3 is arylene and D4 is alkylene or arylene, T1, T2 and T3 are each hydrogen or methyl, X1, X2, X3 and X4 are each -COO-,-OOC-, -O- or a direct bond and A1 and A2 are each a heterocyclic ring, alkylene, which can be interrupted by hetero-atoms, or substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkylene, cycloalkenylene, arylene or aralkylene having 1 or 2 rings. These quaternary ammonium salts are used as cosmetics, as washing agents for textile materials dyed with cationic dyes, as paper sizes, as dye-fixing agents for cellulose-containing materials dyed with anionic dyes and as algicides, fungicides and bactericides.
