Prodn. of gasoline contg. t-amyl methyl ether (TAME) is effected by (a) etherifying a 5C hydrocarbon fraction contg. 2-methylbutenes with methanol to form a TAME-contg. prod. contg. unreacted methanol and hydrocarbons; (b) removing methanol from the prod. by liq-liq. extraction with a hydrocarbon immiscible glycol solvent; and (c) blending the raffinate with gasoline. Step. (a) can be effected as described in US4193770. The glycol solvent can be mono-, di- or triethylene glycol, propylene glycol or a mixt. of these. The solvent:feed wt. ratio in step (b) can be 0.074-6.5:1 (pref. 0.11-0.33:1). The temp. in step (b) can be ambient temp. or that of the effluent from the etherification reactor. Removal of methanol reduces the water-miscibility of the blended prod. (cf. US4193770).
