A portable terminal is provided, the portable terminal comprising: a flexible display unit including a main display area and an auxiliary display area which is extended integrally from the main display area to be bent from one side of the main display area and is smaller in size than the main display area; and a controller adapted to, in response to detecting an occurrence of an event while information is not provided on the main display area, control the flexible display unit to maintain a state that information is not provided on the main display area and to provide an item in a color corresponding to a type of the event on the curved auxiliary display area only.
