PURPOSE:To obtain a fluorinated polymer ultrastrong acidic acatalyst having large ion-exchanging capacity, small solvent swellability, and superior catalytic power by depositing a fluorinated polymer having specific monomer units on a carrier, and subjecting the same to a sulfonic acid conversion treatment. CONSTITUTION:A fluorinated polymer contg. the monomer units expressed by the general formula II or III (in the formulas R is an alkyl group, n is 0, 1 or 2, m is 3-5) is deposited on a carrier of alumina or the like. Thence, it is subjected to a prescribed sulfonic acid conversion treatment, whereby the acid catalyst consisting of the fluorinated polymer contg. the monomer units expressed by the general formulaIas an active component is obtained. The ion exchanging capacity of the fluorinated polymer of this catalyst is 0.2-3.0meq/g (dry polymer). This catalyst is an ultrastrong acid stronger than sulfuric acids, is usable as a superior acid catalyst and lends itself particularly to alkylation reaction, isomerization reaction of toluene and xylene, or the like. |
