After shopping, shopping trolleys are often left standing in car parks or in aisles or trolley-to-bag transfer zones of self-service shops. The device provided for accepting and making ready shopping trolleys is intended to avoid this. The device comprises an insertion opening equipped with two door wings, a conveying device, a shopping-trolley recognition device and a receipt-dispensing device. The conveying device (2) has an electric cylinder (9) which can be screwed onto the floor, acts mechanically and is equipped with a piston (10). The stroke of the piston (10) is limited by a stop (11) which is located at the front end of the piston (10) and runs up against limit switches (14, 14') arranged a distance apart. The piston (10) presses the shopping trolley (18), which has been introduced into the insertion opening (3), automatically into a nested group of several identical shopping trolleys (18) without having to be helped along by hand. <IMAGE>
