The invention relates to a hydraulic press with a hydraulic press piston guided in a press cylinder, a tool connected to it in a fixed position relative to the press piston, and at least one hydraulic damping piston producing a damping force in the opposite direction and guided in a damping cylinder, the press cylinder and the damping cylinder being allocated in a valve-controlled manner to a hydraulic line system, and the damping force of the damping piston being opposed to the force of the press piston only during the last part of the stroke of the press piston. The object of the invention is to simplify the construction of a hydraulic press of this type, to reduce its operating energy and to prevent unexpected blows of the press piston on the damping piston. This object is achieved according to the invention in that the press piston (4) and the damping piston (7, 8) are connected to one another in a fixed position relative to one another, and the working side (12) of the press piston (4), via a first line (13), and its piston-rod side (14) and the working side of the damping piston (7, 8), via a second line (15) separate from the first line (13), are allocated to a common four-way main valve (18) via a first (16) and a second (17) valve-controlled non-return valve, a pressure-relief valve (32) being arranged in the second line (15) upstream of the second non-return valve (17). Such a press is used wherever the cutting shock of a tool is to be prevented or dampened. <IMAGE>
