Laminated sheet strip for use as spectacle frame side arms is modified at one end by longitudinal machining using a bell-section radial miller to remove part of the core material and leave a radiused end. The residual tip layer, comprising the original surface backed by a reduced depth of core material, is then reformed to follow the radiused surface. Improves the appearance of the side arms by allowing the surface finish to extend without a break over the end of the side adjacent to the frame. The reformed tip is fixed to the radiused end of the cut core by using an adhesive or, for thermoplastic materials, by solvent or pref. ultrasonic or friction welding. Any surplus tip may be trimmed off flush with the inner surface of the sidearm. While the machined strip is still clamped, ancillary fittings such as hinge sockets, may also be fitted.
|
