Electroslag remelting in a short sliding mold (13), comprises monitoring the level of a surface (11) of a slag bath (9) in an electroslag-remelting system (10). The level of the surface of the slag bath is preferably continuously measured using preferably a radar measurement probe (3) arranged in a mold cover or a protective gas cover of the electroslag-remelting system. The radar beam produced from the radar measurement probe is guided so that the radar beam strikes on the surface of the slag bath. The determined level of the surface is indicated or represented by an evaluation device. An independent claim is also included for the electroslag remelting system for carrying out the method mentioned above, comprising the mold cover or the protective gas cover for covering the slag bath, where the radar measurement probe for detecting the level of the surface of the slag bath is arranged in the mold cover or the protective gas cover, whose radar beam strikes on the surface of the slag bath.
