The invention relates to a process for operating heating systems, in which heat is generated in at least one burner by the combustion of fuel oil and is used to heat water or another comparable heat-transport medium, for example in a heating boiler. This process provides for preheating the fuel oil before it enters the burner in order to reduce its viscosity. The invention also relates, moreover, to a heating system for carrying out the new process. In this heating system, there is provision for it to contain a treatment unit which is inserted into the path of the fuel oil from the supply tank to the atomiser and acts in the manner of a heat exchanger and through which the fuel oil to be treated flows, on the one hand, and to which heating energy serving for preheating is fed, on the other hand, whilst, within the treatment unit, the fuel oil can come into heat-exchanging contact with the transport or transfer medium containing the heating energy. <IMAGE>
