An immersion heating element is arranged in a container. The immersion heating element is enclosed by a pipe arrangement within the container, which pipe arrangement extends virtually over the entire height of the container and may consist of a single pipe or of a plurality of pipes. In the region of its section located close to the base of the container, the pipe arrangement has at least one inlet opening, and it has at least one outlet opening in the region of its section located close to the top of the container. The arrangement is designed such that, after the immersion heating element has been switched on, the water is split into temperature layers which comprise a plurality of layers and a gravity flow which is directed upwards in the pipe arrangement and is directed downwards outside the pipe arrangement.
