A clamping device for clamping a workpiece relative to a fixed support is described. The clamping device contains a base member which is fixed to the stationary support. A clamping device is rotatably arranged on the base member and contains two clamping jaws, one of which is fixed relative to the base member, except with respect to the relative rotation between the clamping device and the base member. The second clamping jaw is pivotably connected to the first clamping jaw. Both clamping jaws have a working surface, both of which working surfaces serve for holding the particular workpiece. Furthermore, a spindle which co-operates with the fixed clamping jaw to pivot the clamping jaws relative to one another and move the working surfaces relative to one another to permit reliable holding of the workpiece is mounted on the second clamping jaw. Such a clamping device permits the holding of motor-vehicle elements, for example MacPherson strut units or steering columns.
