<p>A structural member, e.g. a profile for use in the manufacture of frames for windows or the like, has a plastics sheathed core, the core (50) comprising an unsaturated polyester resin filled with silicate filler (preferably in the form of hollow micro-spheres) and an additional mineral filler such as calcium carbonate, mica, talc, china clay and calcium silicate - preferably calcium carbonate in stearate coated form - having a particle size in the range of from about 2 to about 100 microns compacted together and the sheath (52) comprising a thin (e.g. not more than 0.5 mm) coating of a methylmethacrylate or ethylmethacrylate homopolymer or copolymer, cross linked with the core by curing the coated core by heat, preferably in an RF field. A method of continuously producing such a profile by the use of plastics extruding machinery and a method for making frames for windows or the like therefrom is described. The core is preferably reinforced by glass fibre rovings (18) arranged in layers.</p> |
