The invention relates to an ignition circuit for a thyristor arrangement in which two branches having at least two thyristors (TH1, TH3 and TH2, TH4), connected in series in the same direction of conduction, are connected in antiparallel. The ignition circuit contains a photo-ignitable auxiliary thyristor (PTH1), one terminal of which is connected to the junction between two diodes (D1, D2) connected in series in the opposite direction of conduction. The second terminal of the photo-ignitable auxiliary thyristor (PTH1) is connected to a line (L) which connects corresponding junctions of the thyristors (TH1, TH3 and TH2, TH4) of the antiparallel-connected branches. All thyristors (TH1 to THn) are ignited via the photo-ignitable auxiliary thyristor (PTH1) and the diodes (D1, D2). Thus only one photo-ignitable auxiliary thyristor (PTH1) is required for igniting several thyristors (TH1 to TH4). This is only loaded with the voltage from one of the thyristors (TH1 to TH4). <IMAGE>
