A compound piston ring has a first and a second ring arranged in an annular groove of a piston. The first ring has an outer sliding surface and an inner circumferential surface with an annular step formed on it. The second ring is arranged between the step and an annular recess which is formed in the upper region of the basic surface of the annular groove. If the rings are inserted into the annular groove in such a way that the lower surface of the first ring is in contact with the lower surface of the annular groove, the lower surface of the second ring is in contact both with an upper surface of the step of the first ring and with an upper surface of the recess in the groove base.
