PURPOSE:To extremely effectively extract phenols, by adding a nitrogen-contng. heterocyclic compound, in a state diluted with a water-insoluble organic solvent or in an undiluted state, as an extracting agent to a phenol-contng. water solution. CONSTITUTION:A nitrogen-contng. heterocyclic compound in a state diluted with a water-insoluble organic solvent or a water-insoluble nitrogen-contng. heterocyclic compound as such is added as an extracting agent to a phenol-contng. water solution to extract phenols from the water solution. The nitrogen-contng. heterocyclic compound may be those including a pyridine or piperidine skeletal structure, for instance. The water-insoluble organic solvent may be toluene, xylene or the like. The water-insoluble pyridine skeletal structure-including compound may be alkyl pyridines or benzyl pyridines containing 10 or more of carbon in total number.
