The grain sorter comprises a tilted sifting board(1) onto which unsorted grain contg. gravel, is wupplied and which is mounted in an agitator framd(2) with a first discharge port(9) at the top end and a second discharge port(10) at the other end. Exit from the first discharge port is controlled by a valve gate(8), itself controlled by a solenoid(21). Light from a source(13) strikes a reflector surface(12) constituting a lower portion of the sifting board, near the first discharge port. The light is picked up by a sensor(14) which controls the solenoid and the gate. The amt. of light received by the sensor is dependent on the proportion of gravel in the grain on the sifting board.
