The concn. of terminal CO2H groups in polyester fibers is reduced by converting the CO2H groups into OH groups bytreatment with an oxirane compd. prior to melt spinning. Thus, a molten polyester prepd. by polycondensing di-Me terephthalate with ethylene glycol was mixed with 0.24% 1,2-epoxy-2-methyl-propane under N. The polymer had a higher intrinsic viscosity and lower terminal CO2H content than the original polymers. Fibers melt spun from the polymer had better strength properties than fibers manufd. from the unmodified polymer and were esp. suitable for tire cord prodn.
