A ceramic hollow article (26) is, for glazing, immersed in a glazing bath (34) with its opening (42) downwards and in the process remains substantially filled with air. A glaze jet (50) is introduced into the interior space (44) of the hollow article (26) below the bath surface (36). The glaze is thereby washed around the outer surface of the hollow article (26), whereas its inner surface is wetted by the glaze jet (50) without the hollow article being filled with glaze. Correspondingly the excess glaze rapidly drips off the inner and outer surfaces of the hollow article (26) when the latter is lifted out of the glazing bath (34). Since the glaze jet (50) is only operated below the bath surface (36), this cannot pollute the environment, in particular the device used for immersing the hollow article (26). <IMAGE>
