The time code generator provides a pulse width modulated digital signal at defined points in a time frame. It comprises a buffer register into which received time signals fed from a clock signal receiver and control function signals are entered in parallel and read-out in series according to the selected code. The signals read-out from the buffer register are fed into a second store effecting the pulse width modulation. Pref. a D/A converter is supplied with the buffer register clock frequency, to provide a sinusoidal carrier, which is amplitude modulated in dependence on the pulse width of the coded digital signal. The time code generator is used in conjunction with a data recording system to allow the time to be recorded along with the data.
