The invention starts from a wire-drawing machine in which the wire is drawn through the drawing dies with the aid of jointly driven drawing pulleys of the same diameter, the peripheral velocities of the drawing pulleys being chosen so as to compensate the respective change in length of the wire in the individual drawing stages. The aim of the invention is to achieve as short as possible a resetting time of the machine when the final diameter of the wire is to be altered. To achieve this end, the machine is, according to the invention, constructed in such a way that, when all the drawing dies are used, the minimum end diameter for the wire is achieved. If the wire is to leave the machine with a larger final diameter, then, according to the method according to the invention, the drawing die which provides this diameter takes the place of the final drawing die and the drawing stages which follow this drawing die are shut down. The wire is pulled through the final drawing die with the aid of a withdrawal pulley, the peripheral velocity of which can be matched to the respective opening diameter of the final drawing die. <IMAGE>
