In an electrically heated air humidifier, a water tank (3) is used, from which, through a small outlet opening (6) present in its closure cover (5), water runs out slowly into a trough (1), on the trough bottom (7) of which the electric heating plate (8) lies. A relatively thin water layer is formed, from which the water evaporates or vaporises. This water layer also closes the outflow opening (6) of the water tank (3) so that no air can penetrate into the interior of the tank (3) and equilibrium is achieved between the hydrostatic inner pressure and the atmospheric outer pressure, which prevents continued flowing of water from the tank (3) for as long as the outflow opening (6) is closed against air access by the water layer in the trough (1). As a result, a constant very low height (H) is maintained so that, in comparison with the tank content, only a small quantity of water constantly has to be heated until it evaporates or vaporises.
