At partial loads and low speeds fuel is cut off from the cylinders D and the air from these cylinders is supplied to the cylinders A, or mixed with the exhaust gases from the cylinders A. Alternatively, exhaust gases from the cylinders A are supplied to the cylinders D and the exhaust gases from these cylinders may be mixed with the remaining exhaust gases from the cylinders A, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
