The invention relates to a process for improving the durability of anti-fouling paints on marine surfaces that are in contact with sea water in motion. The protection of such surfaces is usually achieved by the application of a metal-containing pigment and a film-forming component, which constitutes 1-30 wt-% of the paint and consists of a biologically active copolymer. The latter consists of a) 25-80 mole-% of repeating units of a triorganotin compound R3SnOOCR1 (where R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl group, and R1 is a vinyl, α- methylvinyl or phenylvinyl group) and b) 20-75 mole-% of repeating units of at least one ethylenically unsaturated compound. It has now been found that the durability of such anti-fouling paints can be improved by the additional use of an auxiliary agent consisting of at least one biologically inactive film-forming polymer. The latter consists of a) 1-15 mole-% of repeating units of a triorganotin compound R2,3SnOOCR3 (where R2 has one of the above meanings of R, and R3 has one of the above meanings of R1) and b) 85-99 mole-% of repeating units of at least one ethylenically unsaturated compound in an amount of 0.01-10 wt-%, calculated on the total weight of the coating material.
