The invention relates to a sensor (1) for measuring valve clearance. The sensor (1) consists of a wedge-shaped bar (2) which is provided on both sides with a resistive layer (3, 4) which cohere at the tip (5). When the wedge-shaped rod (2) consists of an electrically conductive material such as, for example, steel, insulating layers (9, 10) are arranged between the resistive layers (3, 4). In order to measure the valve clearance, the sensor (1) is inserted between the rocker (6) and the valve shaft (7) until an electrical contact is produced with the resistive layers (3, 4). The measuring instrument (8) can be used to determine the resistance R(a+b) of the layers (3, 4), which is a measure of the gap width.
