In conventional bicycle pedal gears, the useful force is the product of the pedalling force and the angular position of the pedal crank with respect to the vertical, and therefore at the upper dead centre (0) and in the horizontal position of the pedal crank is equal to the applied force of the foot. This useful force is increased in the region between the pedal crank positions of 0 and 90 DEG in accordance with the invention in that the pedals (5, 6) are connected securely, or so as to be movable to a limited extent, to a rigid pedal arm (8) and in that the pedal arm (8) is suspended in each case in an oscillating fashion at the free end of the associated pedal crank (3, 4). <IMAGE>
